About ATEN

Pioneering Waste Heat Recovery for Power Generation

ATEN (Accretive Thermal Efficiency Node) represents a significant advancement in waste heat recovery technology, developed specifically to address the challenges of the energy transition. By capturing thermal energy that would otherwise be vented to the atmosphere, ATEN creates zero-emission electricity that enhances the efficiency and reduces the emissions intensity of existing power generation assets.

Our Vision

Our vision is to transform waste heat into a valuable energy resource, enabling power generators to maximise efficiency while supporting decarbonisation objectives. We see ATEN technology as a critical component in the energy transition, providing immediate emissions reduction benefits while supporting system reliability.

By 2030, we aim to deploy ATEN technology across multiple power systems globally, enabling:

  • Significant efficiency improvements in gas-fired generation
  • Millions of tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided
  • Enhanced grid stability during the transition to renewable energy
  • Cost-effective electricity provision for communities and industries

The ATEN technology was developed by Volt Power Group, an Australian energy technology company focused on creating innovative solutions for power generation efficiency and emissions reduction. After extensive research and development, the ATEN system was designed to integrate proven subsystems in a patented configuration that maximises energy recovery from gas turbine exhaust.

Initial concept development began in 2018, with laboratory testing and thermal modelling completed by 2020. The first pre-feasibility study was conducted at a Western Australian power facility in 2022, confirming the technical and economic viability of the technology. Following these successful validations, full commercial development commenced in 2023.

Our Origins

Compact / Small Footprint – Retro-fit to existing assets on a brownfields site footprint

Autonomous Operation – No operational personnel required and reduced OPEX

Zero Water – Reduced environmental approval requirements and OPEX

Creates ACCUs – Carbon Credits (CFI) Act 2011 Offset Project / ACCU eligibility (non-Grid)

Grid Stability – Delivering capacity and higher zero-emission penetration stability

Proven Technology – Proven OEM sub-systems

Baseload, Zero Emission Power – incremental zero emission baseload power compatible with Solar / Wind hybrid systems

The ATEN Technology key capabilities and performance characteristics also include:

ATEN is built on established engineering principles, combining:

  • Thermal Energy Capture: Advanced heat exchanger design optimised for gas turbine exhaust streams across various temperature ranges
  • Organic Rankine Cycle Technology: High-efficiency energy conversion using specialised working fluids
  • Modular System Architecture: Scalable design that can be tailored to existing infrastructure
  • Zero-Water Consumption: Air-cooled condensing allows deployment in water-constrained environments
